Digital Product Passport preparation for non-EU exporters.
Your EU customer may ask for structured product data before a legal deadline reaches your factory. Preparing the data pipeline early can become a commercial advantage.
What EU customers are likely to request
- Stable product/model identifiers and GTIN where applicable
- Manufacturer and facility information
- Materials, components and supplier evidence
- Declarations, test reports and compliance documents
- Durability, repair, recycled-content or environmental fields where product rules require them
- Consistent digital files that can be imported into the customer's DPP platform
Who is legally responsible?
Responsibilities vary by product legislation and role. ESPR distinguishes economic operators such as manufacturers, importers and distributors. A non-EU manufacturer should not assume that the EU importer can create all required data without upstream cooperation.
A practical exporter workflow
1. Map SKUs
Remove duplicate model names and create a clean identifier table.
2. Map evidence
Link each SKU to materials, suppliers, tests, declarations and technical documents.
3. Export structured data
Prepare reusable CSV/JSON fields instead of sending scattered PDFs only.
Commercial angle: factories that can provide reliable structured DPP data may be easier for EU buyers to onboard than suppliers who start collecting data only after a deadline.
